BDP-S350

The brand new BDP-S350 is the latest blu-ray dvd player from Sony. In fact, it is so new that it has only just gone on sale in the UK.

The first thing you notice about the replacement for the BDP-S300 is the fact it's so much smaller. According to Sony, it's 45% smaller. It is only 22cm deep as well.

The BDP-S350 chassis is stronger and has been embossed. A new noise reducing fan has also been fitted.

Connectivity on the BDPS350 includes an HDMI port, a coaxial digital port, an Ethernet connection and recessed USB input. Whilst the Sony S350 is only blu-ray Profile 1.1 out of the box, Sony will be releasing a Profile 2.0 firmware update shortly after launch.

As we have come to expect with the BDP-S500, this BDP-S350 menu system features Sony’s new Xross Media Bar (XMB), which should look familiar to anyone who has used a PS3. It’s nice to look at and easy to navigate around.

On the picture front, the BDP-S350 Blu-Ray outputs 1080p/24fps resolution images and can up-scale normal DVD discs to 1080p. All HD audio formats can be output as Bitstream.

If you prefer then it can decode HD audio formats internally, apart from DTS-HD Master Audio, and output them as LPCM. There are no multichannel analogue outputs.

Obviously picture quality is what you are really after and you will be glad to hear it's fantastic. With Blu-ray discs, the BDP-S350 delivers detail, crisply defined edges and smooth motion. There is a real quality to the image that other blu-ray dvd player just cannot seem to manage.

When playing normal DVDs the BDP-S350 is one of the best up-scaling Blu-ray Dvd Player there is. Play a few chapters of 'Spiderman 3' and the clarity of image and lack of noise are very impressive.

Sound-wise, the Sony's solid, controlled, punchy approach to Blu-ray soundtracks really is very impressive. The BDP-S350 copes very well with CD playback too.

This Sony might not have all the features of the BDP-S550 but as an entry level blu-ray dvd player it is pretty much perfect.
